How To Install Linphone 3.8.0 On Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Pinguy OS, LXLE And Other Ubuntu Derivatives

Hello Linux Geeksters. As you may know, Linphone is an open-source VoIP service that allows the users to perform voice calls, video calls and text conversations with friends and other Linphone users.

The latest version avaialble is Linphone 3.8.0, which has been recently released, bringing the below changes:

  • fullscreen mode,
  • hang up button in the video window,
  • wizard for audio/video settings,
  • arabic translation,
  • support of RTP/AVPF (RFC4585) with VP8 codec: this feature allows transmission error
  • recovery for video, which greatly enhance the video quality over unreliable links.

In this article I will show you how to install Linphone 3.8.0 on Ubuntu 14.10 Utopic Unicorn, Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr, Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin, Linux Mint 17.1 Rebecca, Linux Mint 17 Qiana, Linux Mint 13 Maya, Pinguy OS 14.04, LXLE 14.04, Peppermint Five, Elementary OS 0.3 Freya, Elementary OS 0.2 Luna, Deepin 2014, Linux Lite 2 and other Ubuntu 14.10, Ubuntu 14.04 and Ubuntu 12.04 derivative systems.

Because it will be available via PPA soon, installing Linphone 3.8.0 on Ubuntu 14.10, Ubuntu 14.04, Ubuntu 12.04 and derivative systems is easy. All you have to do is add the ppa to your system, update the local repository index and install the linphone package. Like this:

$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:linphone/release
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install linphone

Optional, to remove linphone, do:

$ sudo apt-get install linphone
