YakYak Beta 3 (Google Hangouts Unofficial Client) For Linux Has Been Released

As you may know, YakYak is an open-source, cross-platform, unofficial Google Hangouts client for desktop systems.

Main YakYak features:

  • Send/receive chat messages
  • Create/change conversations (rename, add people)
  • Leave/delete conversation
  • Notifications
  • Toggle notifications on/off
  • Drag-drop, copy-paste or attach-button for image upload.
  • Hangupsbot sync room aware (no bot name, proper user pics)
  • Show inline images
  • Send presence/focus/typing/activeclient to behave like a proper client
  • History scrollback
  • Video/audio integration (open in chrome)
  • Focus/typing indications (mainly a design issue. keep it clean)

The latest version available is YakYak Beta 3, which still needs some enhancements.

Installation instructions:

YakYak is not available via any repository or PPA, but we can easily download the zip archive from github, exctact it, cd into the extracted folder and run the yakyak file:

Install YakYak on 32 bit Linux systems:

$ wget https://github.com/yakyak/yakyak/releases/download/v0.2.0/yakyak-linux-ia32.zip
$ unzip yakyak-linux-ia32.zip
$ cd linux-ia32
$ ./yakyak

Install YakYak on 64 bit Linux systems:

$ wget https://github.com/yakyak/yakyak/releases/download/v0.2.0/yakyak-linux-x64.zip
$ unzip yakyak-linux-x64.zip
$ cd linux-x64
$ ./yakyak

The below instructions should work on all the popular Linux systems, including Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Pinguy OS, Elementary OS, Deepin, Peppermint, LXLE, Linux Lite, Debian, Robolinux, SparkyLinux, Fedora, CentOS, OpenSUSE, Mageia, OpenMandriva, Arch Linux, Manjaro, ROSA Desktop etc.
