Wine (Wine Is Not An Emulator) is an open-source compatibility layer software app that enables the Linux and Unix users to run Windows software on their systems, via the Winelib software library.

At first, Wine was an acronym for WINdows Emulator, but later, the name developers have shifted to the recursive backronym, “Wine is not an emulator”, to highlight that no emulation occurs when running Windows software.

The latest version available is Wine 1.7.49, which brings the following changes:

  • DirectWrite is now good enough for rendering text in Steam.
  • A number of Direct2D improvements.
  • Some more OpenMP functions.
  • Support for namespaces in the IDL compiler.
  • Various bug fixes.

Also, better support for Nocturnal Illusion, Mig Alley Flight Simulator (1999), Death to Spies Moment of Truth, Gamestudio Venice, Nvidia HDR Demo, Fritz 11, XCOM, Cities XL, FEAR 1, FEAR 2, Spellforce 2 Gold, Star Conflict, SpinTires, Among the Sleep, Trion Glyph MMO Manager, Singles 2, Warframe and Wizard 101 UK apps has been implemented.

Installation instructions:

The latest versions of Wine are not available via the default repositories of the supported OpenSUSE systems, but this does not mean that keeping Wine up to date on OpenSUSE is difficult.

All you need to do in order to get the latest version of Wine running on your OpenSUSE system is to add the Wine repository to your system, refresh the repository index and install the wine package.
