Hello Linux Geeksters. As you may know, MATE is a popular GNOME 2 fork, the latest version available being MATE 1.8, available by default on Linux Mint 17 Qiana.

If you are running Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr, install Mate 1.8 on your system by using the instructions in this article.

Via the window snapping feature, the users are able to maximize windows by dragging them to the edge of the screen. Also, if you place the window on the left or right of the screen, the dragged window will be resized and place on the half of the screen, so that two windows can fit perfectly on the desktop. This feature is also available on Unity, GNOME Shell, XFCE, KDE and Cinnamon.

In this article I will show you how to enable Window Snapping on MATE 1.8.

It is disabled by default, so we have to go to the Control Center (via the Mate Menu) -> Windows and from the Placement tab, check “Enable side by side tiling“.
