Hello Linux Geeksters. As you may know, Canonical has been working a lot at the Mir display server, in order to get it ready for both the desktop and mobile versions of Ubuntu. While the Ubuntu Touch already uses Mir by default, Ubuntu 14.04 runs over the good old X.org.

The community was not pleased with Canonical’s decision to replace X.org with Mir, but the Ubuntu developers preferred to build their own display server, instead of patching Wayland or X.org to fit their needs.

Mark Shuttleworth Has Announced That Nvidia And AMD Will Release GPU Drivers With Support For Mir. But Will Intel Do The Same?

Until now, only the open source graphics drivers have support for Mir, but Mark Shuttleworth has announced that Canonical is working with both Nvidia and AMD to create GPU drivers to work over Mir.

We don’t know yet if Intel is intending to release GPU drivers with support for Mir, due to the fact that they are involved into the development of Wayland (along with Red Hat and Samsung), yet another display server.

While the official plan is to set Mir as default starting with Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, along with systemd, Canonical does its best to create a usable version of Mir, for Ubuntu 14.10 Utopic Unicorn, despite the fact that it will not be used by default.
