Hello Linux Geeksters. As you may know, MEGA is a cloud storage service that provides 50 GB free space on the cloud, allowing the users to backup and share files. This storage service is famous because its encryption, the users being able to login via RSA 2048-bit keys.
Recently, an official MEGA client, called MEGA Sync has been released for Linux, allowing the users to easily backup and sync files and folders, on different computers.
MEGA Sync 1.0.29 is available for the latest Ubuntu 14.10, Ubuntu 14.04, Ubuntu 12.04 and derivatives, via PPA. Also, there is the nautilus-megasync package that provides MEGA Sync integration for Nautilus.
In this article I will show you how to install MEGA Sync 1.0.29 on Ubuntu 14.10 Utopic Unicorn, Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr, Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin, Elementary OS 0.3 Freya, Elementary OS 0.2 Luna, Deepin 2014, Peppermint Five, Pinguy OS 14.04, Linux Mint 17 Qiana, Linux Mint 13 Maya, LXLE 14.04, Linux Lite 2.0 and other Ubuntu derivative systems using Nautilus as the default file manager.
Because it is available via PPA, installing MEGA Sync 1.0.29 on the latest Ubuntu and Elementary OS systems is easy. All you have to do is add the ppa to your system, update the local repository index and install the megasync and nautilus-megasync packages. Like this:
$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:eugenesan/ppa
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install megasync nautilus-megasync
$ nautilus -q
For Ubuntu derivatives that do not use Nautilus as the default file manager, Nautilus should be installed via the default repositories:
$ sudo apt-get install nautilus
Optional, to remove megasync and nautilus-megasync, do:
$ sudo apt-get remove megasync nautilus-megasync
