Hello Linux Geeksters. As you may know, the final version of Ubuntu 14.10 Utopic Unicorn is scheduled for release on the 23rd of October, 2014, and will be using Kernel 3.16 as default, the same kernel as Debian 8 Jessie and Fedora 21.
Recently, the developers have announced that Ubuntu 14.10 has reached its Final Beta Freeze Stage, meaning that a new Beta version of Ubuntu 14.10 (and flavors) is on the way:
“As of nowish, the archive is frozen for 14.10 Final Beta preparation, and will continue to be frozen from here until Final release next month. As with the previous release, we have a bot in place that will accept uploads that are unseeded and don’t affect images. Don’t take this as an open invitation to break Feature Freeze on those components, this is just to reduce the burden on the release team, so we only review the uploads that need very serious consideration,”
The stable version of Ubuntu 14.10 Utopic Unicorn will be an interesting release, for a few good reasons:
1. It will be the first Ubuntu system that comes with two Unity flavors: one using Unity 7 running over X.org, and the Ubuntu Desktop Next flavor which uses Unity 8 and Mir, the two being for now available only on Ubuntu Touch.
2. Starting with Ubuntu 14.10, Ubuntu got a new official flavor: Ubuntu Mate.
3. Kubuntu 14.10 will be using the new and awesome KDE Plasma 5.
4. Ubuntu 14.10 will bring better support for 3G mobile modems.
